LESOTHO
SOTHOKIDS
A first for RFI, Lesotho, or “Kingdom of the Mountains”, is an enclave within South Africa. In this small southern African country, ancestral traditions and beliefs are highly respected by its Basotho inhabitants. They attach great importance to their ancestors, the Balimo, who protect them from the evil Thkolosi. Sothokids is the conservatory of the country’s popular traditions. Each member owns his or her famous Basotho blanket, made of thick wool.
Of great cultural importance, it is received at the symmetrical stages of life (initiation, circumcision or marriage). Sothokids sing and dance famo, reflecting miners’ culture and daily life, to the sound of the accordion and the rhythm of percussion.
